About NEN 7510

The NEN 7510 standard was created to raise awareness in the healthcare sector regarding information security and to make its application more manageable. NEN 7510 describes the concept of information security in healthcare as follows: ensuring the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of all information needed to provide responsible care to patients.

History of NEN 7510

The first NEN 7510 standard was published in 2004. The standard is based on the ‘Code for Information Security’ and is tailored to the Dutch healthcare sector. Our current NEN 7510 certificate was issued on October 6, 2023. NEN has guided the standardization process, where the involved parties with their diverse interests have established the agreements for information security in healthcare under consensus.

Principles of NEN 7510

The standard includes several quality criteria. Besides ensuring these criteria, the standard requires that the measures in the field of information security are set up in a controllable manner. Only when this is arranged can adequate information security be discussed. Healthcare institutions are required to specify the information security relevant to the respective process within the framework of the standard, along with the associated measures.
